6 Most Over-Hyped Scenic Drives in California (Sorry, But You Know It’s True)

VW Bus along the Big Sur Coastline.

Thinking you’ll be cruising in silence with ocean views and Instagram sunsets? Think again. Some scenic drives on the West Coast attract so many visitors, traffic snarls and selfie chaos destroy the vibe entirely. Here are six iconic routes that might look better in pictures than they feel behind the wheel.

1. Pacific Coast Highway – Big Sur, CA

McWay Falls, a waterfall dumping into the ocean.

Sure, PCH is gorgeous—but it’s also one of the most congested coastal roads in the country. During summer weekends, traffic backs up for miles near McWay Falls, Bixby Bridge, and Pfeiffer Beach, with vehicles often parked on shoulders and drivers jamming the road for selfies. Daily vehicle volume hits 6,500 on average, spiking to 14,200 in peak zones. Trails, viewpoints, and restrooms vanish under foot traffic, turning a peaceful drive into a bumper-to-bumper slog.

2. Bixby Creek Bridge – Highway 1, CA

That iconic arch over the ocean has gone viral—but locals say it’s become a car park, not a picture spot. On holiday weekends, the area becomes “like a Safeway parking lot,” with drivers blocking lanes to snap the same sunset shot. Unless you arrive at dawn on a weekday, you’re looking at log-jammed lot lines and tourist traffic—lots of it.

3. 49-Mile Scenic Drive – San Francisco, CA

Once a leisurely loop past landmarks and sea breezes, this iconic route is now a maze of street closures, crowded neighborhoods, and detours. Since closing parts of JFK Drive and the Great Highway to cars, the official 49‑Mile route is fragmented—drivers now dodge cyclists, road construction, and confusing one-ways. What was a relaxing showcase has become a slow, stop-and-start traffic puzzle.

4. Interstate 405 – People’s “Bypass,” SoCal

Not your typical coastal cruise, but Angelenos humorously call it the “busiest freeway in America.” In part of Orange County, ADT exceeded 374,000 vehicles in 2008, and it regularly wins spots on highly congested road lists—even though drivers take it thinking it’s a quicker route. Scenic? No. Over-hyped? Definitely.

5. Big Sur’s Narrow Coastal Ribbon

The narrow, two-lane highway hugging steep ocean cliffs has rarely had enough infrastructure to support its popularity—no passing lanes, tight curves, and limited pullouts. Smartphone culture has turned turnout zones into Instagram photo shoots, clogging the road and jamming locals’ commutes . It’s arguably one of the most overrun coastal drives in the U.S.

6. Pacific Coast Highway – Orange County to San Mateo

Even outside Big Sur, PCH is crowded. A 2016 Caltrans corridor study noted recurring peak-hour delays in areas like Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, West Newport, and Laguna Canyon. And as highways widen, traffic only increases—thanks to induced demand—making what should be a seaside cruise feel like rush-hour freeway.

Why These Drives Disappoint

  • Mass tourism & Instagram culture pack roads and lookouts
  • Infrastructure limits—no lanes, limited pullouts or sightlines
  • Induced demand means more roads = more traffic anyway
  • Peak-season trap—arrive late and you’ll be gridlocked – come during the shoulder seasons.

OK, OK.. To be fair, we actually DO love the Big Sur and Coastal drives! Of course, they are beautiful and worth it; however, they can get a bit dramatic. Can you blame ’em? Don’t be afaird to go, just know when to go and what to expect.
