Washington’s Weirdest Laws That Still Exist Today

Every state has its quirky, outdated laws that make us scratch our heads, and Washington is no exception. Here are some of the most bizarre laws still hanging around in the Evergreen State. (No promises that anyone actually enforces these, though!)

1. It’s Illegal to Harass Bigfoot

In Skamania County, it’s actually illegal to harm or harass Bigfoot. Passed in 1969, this law was intended to protect anyone (or anything) resembling Bigfoot in the area. So, if you’re out in the forests and spot something Sasquatch-y, remember: look, don’t touch!

2. No Poaching Sasquatch

In Whatcom County, it’s also illegal to kill Bigfoot. This law was introduced to preserve the legend and has become a quirky part of local lore. While most locals may never see Bigfoot, they take his “rights” seriously just in case!

3. Lollipops are Off the Menu in Lynden

In the town of Lynden, selling lollipops was banned for many years because they were deemed a hazard to children. While it’s no longer strictly enforced, the odd rule remains, leaving lollipop enthusiasts puzzled.

Though not often enforced, it’s technically illegal to buy meat on Sundays in Washington. This rule is a leftover from early “blue laws” aimed at keeping Sundays free of commercial activities. While times have changed, the law still stands in writing.

5. It’s Illegal to Paint Polka Dots on the American Flag

While most wouldn’t dream of painting polka dots on the flag, this oddly specific law makes it illegal in Washington. Aimed at preventing disrespect, it may be one of the most niche laws around—but it’s still on the books!

6. X-Rays Can’t Be Used to Fit Shoes

It’s illegal in Washington to use an X-ray machine to size someone’s feet. This strange regulation dates back to when some stores used “fluoroscopes” to measure shoe fit in the 1930s and 40s. Once health risks became apparent, the law went into effect, banning the practice for good.

7. Throwing Rocks on the Highway is Prohibited

While most laws are common sense, Washington state explicitly prohibits throwing rocks on highways. Aimed at protecting drivers from sudden road hazards, this law makes sense, even if it sounds funny at first!
