Where NOT to Retire on the West Coast: 6 Towns That Might Surprise You

Dreaming of retiring to a cozy coastal town or scenic mountain village on the West Coast? You’re not alone. But before you pack up and move, it’s worth doing a reality check—because some of the most “picturesque” towns have some not-so-retirement-friendly secrets.

Whether it’s high housing costs, limited healthcare, crime, or just “what do I even do here?” vibes, here are six West Coast towns you might want to think twice about retiring in—even if they look perfect on paper.

1. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Why it looks good: Ocean views, cute shops, coastal charm
Why it’s not great for retirement: The cost of living is high, real estate is even higher, and local services are very limited. Need a specialist doctor? You’re driving to Portland. Also, good luck finding year-round housing not owned by vacationers.

2. South Lake Tahoe, California

Why it looks good: Mountain views, skiing, beautiful lake life
Why it’s not great for retirement: Expensive housing, heavy snow in winter, wildfire risk in summer, and a serious lack of accessible healthcare. It’s fun to visit—not so fun if you need regular prescriptions and hate shoveling.

3. Port Townsend, Washington

Why it looks good: Victorian charm, coastal breezes, strong arts scene
Why it’s not great for retirement: It’s remote. Like, “one hospital and long ferry rides” remote. It’s also pricier than you’d expect, and the weather? Windy, gray, and rainy for a lot of the year.

4. Mendocino, California

Why it looks good: Coastal cliffs, boutique galleries, chill vibes
Why it’s not great for retirement: Housing is sky-high, the weather is damp and foggy, and it’s far from just about everything—including quality healthcare. If you need anything more than a small clinic, you’re in for a long drive.

5. Ashland, Oregon

Why it looks good: Theater town, walkable, lots of retirees already live there
Why it’s not great for retirement: Wildfire smoke has become a recurring problem, real estate is no longer cheap, and tourism makes summers chaotic. Locals say it’s lost some of its old charm—and the infrastructure hasn’t exactly kept up.

6. Ocean Shores, Washington

Why it looks good: Affordable beach town, low-key coastal living
Why it’s not great for retirement: The healthcare situation is dicey, especially for anything specialized. Plus, it’s rainy, windy, and can feel isolated for long stretches of the year. Also: tsunami zone. Just saying.

TL;DR: Pretty Isn’t Always Practical

It’s easy to fall in love with a charming town on vacation—but living there full-time, especially in retirement, is a whole different story. Always look beyond the views and ask: Can I afford it? Is there a hospital? Will I still like this place in February?
