Four West Coast museums that turn a storm day into the best day of your trip

Every West Coast trip has that morning: the sky is the color of wet cement, the trailhead is a mud pit, and someone in the car suggests going home. Don’t. Rain season is when the best indoor stops on this coast quietly outshine the scenery.

Here are four museums from Seattle to Monterey that are worth building a day around, with real hours and prices so you can plan before the clouds roll in.

Columbia River Maritime Museum, Astoria, Oregon

Astoria sits at the mouth of the Columbia, where a river meets the Pacific and the two fight it out on a stretch of water known as the Graveyard of the Pacific. This is the museum that tells that story, and it is my pick for the best storm-day stop on the whole list.

An interactive map at the entrance shows the ships and lives lost near the Columbia River Bar, and you can board the Lightship Columbia, a National Historic Landmark, to see where the crew cooked, slept, and worked. The museum is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5 PM, adult admission is $18, and the lightship keeps shorter hours (11 AM to 3 PM), so call ahead before you count on it.

Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle, Washington

Seattle does gray days better than anywhere, and MoPOP is the reason to lean into one. The building sits at 325 5th Avenue N, right under the Space Needle, and it is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Its Massive: The Power of Pop Culture exhibit is the headliner, and two new exhibitions, Puget Sound Stories and Jimi Hendrix, are slated to open November 21. Check the museum’s ticket page for current pricing before you go.

High Desert Museum, Bend, Oregon

Think a museum can’t be an adventure? This one sprawls across 135 acres with more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space. Inside you get the Desertarium, a close look at high desert reptiles, amphibians, and fish, plus galleries on Central Oregon history.

Outside, river otters swim behind glass walls and birds of prey like owls, falcons, and eagles live on site because they can’t be released into the wild. It is open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM, so bring a jacket for the outdoor stretches and pick your own pace.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey, California

If you’re going to be stuck inside, be stuck inside with sharks. The aquarium’s kelp forest puts you at a diver’s eye level, with sardines, leopard sharks, and wolf-eels weaving through sunlit fronds, and the sea otter exhibit is pure entertainment.

Adult admission is $65 for ages 18 to 69, and the aquarium recommends buying tickets in advance, so book before you drive down. Yes, that price stings, but it is the one museum on this list that can eat a whole rainy day without anyone getting bored.

How to use this list

Seattle to Monterey is a long drive, so treat these as stops for whichever part of the coast the forecast catches you on. Pair Astoria with a night on the Oregon coast, Bend with a snowy weekend, and Monterey with a slow Big Sur day.

Trip tips: grab a rental car to get out here, lock in your hotel before the good rooms are gone, or skip both and book a camper van instead.

Rules and fees change, so always confirm current requirements before you go.
