11 Small Beach Towns That Are Way Better in the Shoulder Season

Summer crowds at the beach are no joke—packed parking lots, jacked-up hotel prices, and everyone fighting for a square foot of sand. But hit the coast in spring or early summer, and it’s a whole different vibe. Shoulder season means fewer people, better deals, and (sometimes) even better weather—especially on the West Coast.

Here are 11 small beach towns in California, Oregon, and Washington that are perfect for an off-peak coastal escape before the chaos of summer hits.

1. Cambria, California

This dreamy little town on California’s Central Coast feels like something out of a storybook. Cambria has dramatic coastal bluffs, art galleries, and cozy inns—but in spring, you also get wildflowers along the cliffs and uncrowded strolls on Moonstone Beach.

Plus, it’s right near Hearst Castle and the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, which are way more enjoyable to visit when you’re not elbowing tourists every five seconds.

2. Manzanita, Oregon

Tucked just south of the tourist-packed Cannon Beach, Manzanita is chill, quiet, and extremely cute. In spring, you’ll still get misty coastal views, wide beaches, and a walkable downtown with indie shops and good coffee—but without the summer parking nightmare.

Hike up Neahkahnie Mountain for epic views or just beachcomb with a warm drink in hand. Either way, it’s lowkey coastal perfection.

3. Cayucos, California

If your idea of a beach town includes old-school vibes, surfers, and not much else—Cayucos delivers. This Central Coast spot has one main drag, a historic pier, and barely any crowds in spring. Weather’s already decent by April/May, and you can often score ocean-view rooms at prices that would triple in July.

Eat cookies from Brown Butter Cookie Co., then watch surfers from the pier with zero stress.

4. Seabrook, Washington

Yes, it’s a planned beach community—but Seabrook nails the whole coastal-cottage-core vibe. It’s small, stylish, and way easier to book in the spring before Seattle families invade in the summer. Rent a bike, walk the trails, or just post up on the beach with a blanket and a book.

Spring can bring some wind and chill, but there are hot tubs and fire pits everywhere—so honestly, who cares?

5. Capitola, California

Cute, colorful, and often overlooked in favor of nearby Santa Cruz, Capitola is a shoulder-season gem. The pastel houses along the beach make it ultra-photogenic, and the town is small enough to explore in a day—but you’ll want to stay longer.

By May, temps are usually warm enough for sunbathing and sipping a cocktail with your toes in the sand. Summer gets slammed here, so spring is the sweet spot.

6. Yachats, Oregon

Pronounced “YAH-hots” (because Oregon is wild like that), this tiny coastal town is all about rocky shores, tide pools, and crashing waves. In spring, the whale migration is still happening, and the dramatic coastline around Cape Perpetua looks even more magical with early wildflowers in bloom.

There’s also craft beer, cozy cabins, and a whole lot of moody PNW vibes—without the tourist caravan.

7. Trinidad, California

Way up in Northern California, Trinidad is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it beach towns—with redwoods on one side and rugged coastline on the other. Spring brings foggy mornings, lush greenery, and uncrowded beaches that look straight out of Big Sur (without the price tag or traffic).

Bonus: You’re close to Redwood National and State Parks, so it’s the perfect base for a coastal + forest combo trip.

8. Bandon, Oregon

Known for its dramatic sea stacks and quiet beaches, Bandon flies under the radar compared to other Oregon Coast towns. Spring is cooler here, sure—but it’s also way less crowded, and you can still explore the boardwalk, grab local fish and chips, or check out the famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Plus, those moody morning beach walks? Pure therapy.

9. Avalon, California (Catalina Island)

Catalina gets way more chill in spring—fewer cruise ship day-trippers and lower ferry prices mean you can actually enjoy the island. Avalon, the main town, feels like a Mediterranean village with palm trees, pastel buildings, and clear turquoise water.

The ferry from Long Beach is only about an hour, and by May, it’s warm enough to swim, snorkel, or rent a kayak.

10. Pacific Beach, Washington

If you want remote, this is your spot. Pacific Beach is tiny, rustic, and quiet—but the beach is long, sandy, and perfect for a peaceful escape. In shoulder season, you’ll have huge stretches of coast to yourself (maybe with a bald eagle or two flying by), and the sunsets are chef’s kiss.

Just pack layers—spring here is still very PNW.

11. Avila Beach, California

Tucked between San Luis Obispo and Pismo, Avila Beach is smaller and warmer than its neighbors. Thanks to its south-facing orientation, it stays surprisingly sunny even in spring. The beach is protected, making it perfect for swimming, kayaking, or just lying around like a lizard in the sun.

And yes, there are hot springs nearby, because California is unfairly good at this whole beach thing.
