West Coast Scenic Drives That Don’t Actually Live Up to the Hype

VW Bus along the Big Sur Coastline.

Ah yes, the legendary “scenic drive.” Nothing says West Coast road trip like hours of hype about jaw-dropping views—until you’re stuck behind an RV, white-knuckling hairpin turns, or realizing half the road is closed for construction. Don’t get me wrong, these routes are still beautiful, but they might not live up to the romanticized version in your head.

Pacific Coast Highway (California)

Pacific Coast Highway road trip.

Endless ocean views, dramatic cliffs, cute beach towns—it’s supposed to be the ultimate road trip. In reality, it’s also the ultimate patience test: hairpin turns, constant traffic, and construction zones that kill the vibe. Still worth it, just maybe not on a weekend in July.

Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway (Oregon)

Those waterfall shots look dreamy online. But here’s what you don’t see: no parking, jam-packed viewpoints, and a line just to get a photo at Multnomah Falls. The drive is short and scenic, but it can feel more like a conveyor belt than a road trip.

Highway 101 Through the Redwoods (California)

Sure, it’s epic to drive beneath massive trees—but it’s over in about 10 minutes, and the rest of the highway is just… highway. Instagram makes it seem like every mile is mystical forest magic. Reality check: expect big trucks, busy lanes, and short stretches of actual redwoods.

Mount Rainier’s Paradise Road (Washington)

The photos of wildflower meadows framed by Mount Rainier look unreal. But driving there is a stop-and-go crawl during peak season, with barely any parking once you arrive. The views are stunning—if you can snag a spot before giving up and turning around.

Highway 1 Through Big Sur (California)

The cliffside views are breathtaking… and so is realizing how quickly your gas tank empties while crawling along at 20 mph. Between tourist traffic and no cell service, Big Sur can feel more stressful than serene. Gorgeous? Absolutely. Worth the hype? Depends on how much you love playing bumper cars on a cliffside.
